Extremely Lightweight Nanocardboard Is Stronger than Corrugate...
Extremely Lightweight Nanocardboard Is Stronger than Corrugate... Extremely Lightweight Nanocardboard Is Stronger than Corrugate... Extremely Lightweight Nanocardboard Is Stronger than Corrugated CardboardCorrugated cardboard is a staple in the packaging industry. It utilizes the standard sandwich structure two solid sandwich panels separated by a layer of lightweight webbing or lattice. This design provides the optimum combination of low weight and high stiffness. Sandwich-structure composite materies are common across a variety of industries, especially for applications that require those characteristics. But, of course, industry is always look for lighter, stronger materials.A team of engineers from the University of Pennsylvania has created a new material called nanocardboard that is the ultrathin equivalent of corrugated paper cardboard. Not only is it extremely light weight - one square centimeter weighs less than a thousandth of a gram) - it is an excellent thermal insulator a nd springs back to its original shape after being bent in half. The idea came to Igor Bargatin, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania, while he was listening to a presentation on the mechanical properties of the shells of microscopic algae called diatoms. Some of these creatures rely on a sandwich structure to evolve hard outer shells that achieve very high stiffness while using only a minimum amount of material (silicon oxide).During the talk, it occurred to me that we should be able to make similar structures using micro- and nanofabrication tools, Bargatin said.Detail of the basketweave webbing geometry. Image University of PennsylvaniaHis biggest challenge was finding a way at the nanoscale to attach the top and bottom sandwich layers to the interior core. At the macroscale, he continues, you can just glue the face sheets and the lattice together, but at the nanoscale, the structures we work with are thousands of times thinner than any layer of glue you can find. For You Is This the Most Wear-Resistant Material in the World?Bargatin teamed with the universitys Singh Center for Nanotechnology to design a solid silicon template with channels running throughout. The structure consists of perforated sheets and tubes connecting the sheets that exactly match the perforations. Aluminum oxide is then chemically deposited into an ultra-thin nanometer layer over the silicon. Aluminum oxide is used because it is easily deposited using atomic layer deposition, creating a conformal layer with a constant thickness and no gaps.Once the template is encased, the nanocardboard can be cut to size. After the sides are exposed, the silicon on the inside is etched away. It leaves a hollow shell of aluminum oxide with a network of tubes connecting the top and bottom faces and a thickness of tens of microns. This geometry allowed us to create a nanoscale analog of the sandwich plate in a single deposition step, witho ut using any glue, to create the monolithic structure we dubbed nanocardboard, says Bargatin. The teams simulations predicted that distantly spaced circular channels going through the sheets would provide optimal stiffness. However, the results were inconsistent due to wrinkles that randomly formed along the lines between the channels. The team eventually settled on a basket-weave design, featuring close-set, slit-shaped channels arranged in alternating directions. With this basket-weave structure, potential wrinkles do not meander around the channels, which takes a lot of energy, Bargatin says. As a result, wrinkles do not appear in the basket-weave structure at all.One of the most surprising properties of nanocardboard is that it can be bent very sharply and then recover its shape, as if nothing happened. If you try doing this with corrugated paper cardboard, a crease forms, which becomes a permanent line of weakness, Bargatin said. This behavior does not have a precedent in typical macroscopic sandwich plates because the extreme shape recovery is enabled by the saatkorn perforations that are necessary to create nanocardboard in the first place, which are missing in conventional sandwich plates.Bargatins team continues to explore applications that could benefit from the low weight and low thermal conductivity of nanocardboard. We are looking at microelectromechanical system sensor applications, from new types of probes for atomic force microscopy to resonant gas sensors, which can benefit from the very low thickness of the nanocardboard structure, he said. Potential also exists as a thermal insulator in thermionic energy converters.Future work will also explore an intriguing phenomenon Shining light on a piece of nanocardboard allows it to levitate. Heat from the light creates a temperature gradient between the two sides of the plate, which pushes a current of air molecules out through the bottom. Bargatin is currently exploring a new propulsion mechanism base d on the photophoretic forces that cause the levitation. This could lead to new types of microflyers that operate at both atmospheric pressure or at very high altitudes of over 50 km, which is too high for traditional aircraft like balloons and airplanes. However, it is too early to speak about applications with any certainty until we can determine the fundamental limits of how large these forces can be, he said.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion This behavior does not have a precedent in typical macroscopic sandwich plates because the extreme shape recovery is enabled by the same perforations that are necessary to create nanocardboard in the first place. Tips for Using Google for Job Searches
Tips for Using Google for Job SearchesTips for Using Google for Job SearchesGoogle for Jobs uses advanced Google toolsto help job seekers find positions closely matching their preferences. Learn what Google for Jobs is, how it works, and how it can improve your own job search. What Is Google for Jobs? Google for Jobs is a job search featurepowered by Google. Job seekers cansearchfor and apply to open positions directly from the Google search bar. Google for Jobs is similar to job search engines likeIndeed.com,which pulls job listings from many different sources. The difference is that Google is pulling the job listings for your review and Googles technology will power the search results. How Google for Jobs Works Like other Google products, Google for Jobs works very simply. When you type a query into Google Search, it will give you a list of jobs that match that query. The Google for Jobs search mechanism will retrieve jobs from many differentjob sitesand list them at the to p of your search results. TechCrunch reports that CareerBuilder, Monster, LinkedIn, Glassdoor,Facebook, Care.com, and other serviceshave partnered with Google. However, its important to note that one site that does not currently partner with Google for Jobs isIndeed.com. If you type marketing coordinator jobs into Google Search, for example, youll get a list of postings from various job sites. These will be toward the top of your search results, in a packung labeled Jobs. This box will contain a few job listings, and then you can click on a link at the bottom of the box to see even mora jobs that match your search terms. The job listing will show you when the job was posted, where it was originally listed, how long the commute is, and whether the position is full-time. Filter the Job Listings You can add filters to the Google search. Use them to filter those job listings like you do when you use theadvanced search optionson a job search site. You can narrow your search by categor y, the date the job was posted, the type of job (full time, part-time, etc.), the company type, the specific employer, and more. You can also narrow your search by location Google for Jobs offers options for jobs within 2, 5, 15, 30, 60, 100, and 200 miles of your location (or any location you select). Check Salary Information Another feature of Google for Jobs is that you can seesalary informationfor the job, even if the listing doesnt contain any salary information. If no salary information is included, Google for Jobs will provide data on a typical salary for that kind of job, based on information compiled by Glassdoor, PayScale, Paysa, LinkedIn, and other sites. Get More Information At the bottom of each job listing, you can see even more information compiled by Google. You can see the companys rating on Glassdoor and other career-related sites (if this information is available), a link to the companys website, and even more job openings from the company. You can also see Google Search results for the company if you want to get more information on the organization. Applying for Jobs If you are interested in a job, you can submit your application. At the top of the job description, Google for Jobs will show you all of the job boards that have this listing (including the company website), so you can choose which job board or website to use to apply. This is useful if you already have an account on some job boards, but not others. Saving Jobs and Job Alerts You can also bookmark any job listing by clicking on the Save button at the top of the posting. You can then access any bookmarked jobs by clicking on your Saved tab at the top of the Google for Jobs page. You can alsoset up job alerts for a particular job search. If you do this, Google will let you know when a new job that matches your requirements is posted. Google Jobs for Veterans Google also has a job search tool created to help veterans find job openings that are a match for their military experience. Service members can search jobs for veterans on Google and then enter their specific military job codes (MOS, AFSC, NEC, etc.) to see relevant civilian jobs that require similar skills to those used in their military roles. How Google for Jobs Helps You Search By using Google for Jobs and Google Jobs for Veterans, you can save a step or two when you are searching for jobs. Instead of using a specific job search site to look for jobs that meet the criteria you enter, youcando all of this directly on Google. Find More Job Listings Googles job search tools can help job seekers find jobs that might not show up in a traditional Google search, or even in a job search on another job site. Users can refine results and produce more personally relevant lists of jobs by using filters for factors like industry, job title, location, and date posted. Narrow Down Your Search Criteria Google for Jobs helps job seekers find hard-to-categorize jobs that might not be easily found by c licking on traditional job categories like retail, sales, or finance. For example, if you search for teacher jobs, Google for Jobs will offer ways to narrow down your search. They will offer more detailed titles (such as Assistant Teacher, ESL Teacher, and more), as well as a list of relevant employers. Save Job Search Time Google for Jobs also saves job seekers time. For example, once job seekers generate a list ofopen positions, they will be able to click on individual jobs and apply directly through the employers website or another job board. Thats a big time saver. Get the Scoop on the Job and the Company Google for Jobs also provides a lot of information on the company, the average salary, and more. This helps job seekers quickly learn whether an organization is a good fit for them, which helps them save time applying to jobs they arent actually interested in. Optimally, users will have a better selection of jobs to consider, and they will be able to access them more easily. Th ats a win for both job seekers and for employers who are having difficulty finding strong candidates.

McKinsey Jobs
McKinsey JobsMcKinsey JobsLearn what it takes to land a job with the trusted advisor to many of the worlds most influential businesses and institutions. It ranks among the unquestioned laws of big business over the last half century If you want to be taken seriously, you hire McKinsey Company. The job seekers corollary If you want a career in big business, you seriously hope that McKinsey Company will hire you. A perennial top-place finisher in rankings of the most coveted employers, McKinsey is also among the most selective. Last year, the consulting powerhouse received 225,000 job applications. It made offers to a mere one percent- or 2,200- of them.Thats the bad news. The good news is that the days when McKinsey only hired Harvard MBAs are long gone. As recently as 1978, HBS graduates accounted for mora than 25% of McKinsey consultants, but in 2013, less than half of the firms new hires even had an MBA. An increasing percentage of McKinsey hires have advanced professional degrees instead- PhDs, law degrees, and others. The firm employs several hundred MDs, some of which dont even work in its healthcare practice. As the firms focus has expanded well beyond its historical franchises of strategy and organizational structure, so, too, has the expertise it seeks in new recruits. Today, almost half of the firms client work has to do with risk, marketing, business technology, or operations, and, if you can bring any of that to the table, you dont necessarily need an MBA (of course, it wouldnt hurt if you didfrom Harvard). So, how do you get a job at McKinsey? Start by listening to what they tell you. The firms website is chock-full of advice on how to present your best self to the firm. While theirs is a grueling interview process, even for those who succeed, those who dont can hardly claim that they didnt know what was coming. For such a notlageoriously secretive enterprise, McKinsey could hardly be more open about the types of people it seeks to hire and the proce ss by which it will evaluate them.If youre smart, youll have done a few thousand- Im kidding, you can stop at a few hundred- practice versions of the firms famous case studies (Im kidding again. You can stop at 10 or 20.). You can find them on their own website or in the endless number of books promising to unlock case-study secrets. However, there is no secret to solving case studies. Theres only this simple fact Youll be judged less on specific answers to case questions than on the method by which you arrived at them. In other words, youll be judged on how you think.McKinsey has separated itself from the competition for the better part of a century in large part by its relentless commitment to recruiting and developing its talent, the always-evolving aspects of which I chronicle in my new book, The Firm The Story of McKinsey and Its Secret Influence on American Business. Due to the very nature of their business, problem-solving capabilities will always be foremost on McKinseys lis t of required traits, but the firm devotes an equal amount of effort to evaluating applicants interpersonal skills and emotional quotient - or EQ.McKinsey has a well-earned reputation as a launching pad for plum corporate, government, and non-profit roles almost anywhere in the world- the firm has more than 100 offices in 60 countries. And, the reason that people hire people who used to work at McKinsey is the same reason that clients hire McKinsey itself- its consultants are the worlds best at combining an intellectual approach to problem solving with practical advice on how to put the chosen solution in place.Youre not going to get anywhere in a McKinsey interview if you dont blow them away with your natural curiosity and creativity. These people are the philosopher kings of business, after all. But youre also not going to get anywhere if you fail to wrap it all up with a recommended course of action. With that in mind, the best advice I can offer anyone seeking a job at McKinsey is to remember what it is that their clients need from them. Real impact comes not just from having a compelling answer to a question but also grounded and explicit thoughts on how to implement that answer once youve got it. So, get excited about finding an answer to your case-study question. But, dont forget to get equally excited about what youre going to do with it.

10 Secrets of Superstar Interns
10 Secrets of Superstar Interns10 Secrets of Superstar Interns10 Secrets of Superstar InternsReady to nail your summer internship? Keep these tips in mind. TWEETSummer internships are here If you have scored one of the coveted slots, you are probably excited and nervous at the same time. The interviews may have addressed what it will be like, but you never really know until you are there. If you have already started, you may be feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the protocol still. If this is you, I encourage you to take a deep breath. Whether you are loving your internship or are off to a tenuous start, read on for summer internship advice on how to get the most out of the experience.1. Know what you want to get out of it.Clarity on what you are hoping to get out of this experience will go a long way towards focusing your mental game and your efforts during the summer. Perhaps you want a glimpse of what it is like to work in the area you are studying. Maybe you hope to network a nd meet professionals who can help you connect to your dream job, or make some money. Be honest with yourself about why you are there.2. Mingle and networkWhether you are the life of a party or prefer quiet observation from the sidelines, being in a professional environment is a fantastic opportunity to network. Dont just stick with other interns I know they are fun and easy to relate to, but venture out into the halls and meet other people. Ask them for internship advice, offer to buy them a coffee in exchange for a 20 minute chat, and learn as much as you can.3. Dress appropriately. This should go without saying, but dress professionally for the environment you are in. Even if you are stuck in the geschftszimmer all day making photocopies, look as if you are planning to shadow a partner into a client meeting (it just might happen). The best suggestion I ever heard on dressing appropriately was from a wonderful HR professional who was running my intern orientation at Ernst Young. Her advice? If you look at yourself in the mirror and are not quite sure whether something is appropriate, change.4. Do your assigned tasks cheerfully and efficiently.Yes, even the tedious ones. You may be asked to get coffee, make copies, deliver reports, or organize the file room. Hopefully those arent the only assignments you will get during the summer internship, but when a boring one lands on your desk, pick it up cheerfully and get to it.The reality of the professional office is, everyone does some admin. You might be feeling a little overqualified for making photocopies, but you know who else is overqualified for that task? Everyone around you. Your professionalism and efficiency in handling simple administrative tasks will pave the way for mora interesting projects.5. If you are underutilized, ask for more work.Boring work may not be your first choice, but it beats sitting around doing nothing for a long time. The first few hours may be fun, but you will probably feel like y ou have reached the end of the Internet by the second day. I have a vivid memory of sitting around with nine other interns waiting for assignments for several long days. When one of us finally scored a task of stuffing letters into envelopes, we nearly had a fight over who would get to do it, and ended up splitting the task 10 ways just to have something productive to do.Learn from my experience and get proactive about asking for work at your summer internship. Sometimes, managers are reluctant to assign you a project because of the learning curve that is involved. Demonstrate that you can pick up concepts quickly, and offer to work with your managers preference regarding interruptions for questions. Ask about any long-term ongoing projects that would keep you busy for a while.6. Observe and absorb as much as you can.Whether you are actively doing something or just shadowing your manager, pay attention to how things are done. You will notice that some of the practices and methods ar e not what they teach you at school. File away the differences, and practice open-mindedness.7. Do your best work every time.No one expects you to do something perfectly the first time you attempt it. That being said, honest diligent effort and willingness to learn from mistakes go a long way. You are being trusted with real projects what you do will affect many people. Do your best work.8. If you are unsure, ask.During your summer internship, you will probably find yourself unsure about how to do something roughly 90% of the time. One of my managers used to joke that there is nothing like a professional internship to make you forget how to write your name Anticipate that, and get clarity on your managers preference regarding question timing. Some prefer that you ask as the question occurs to you, others would rather not be interrupted multiple times and will ask you to compile your questions. Remember that your manager is busy, but he does not want you to spin your wheels. This is your opportunity to practice balance and good judgment.9. Ask for feedback. You wont get better unless the professionals around you generously offer feedback and suggestions for improvement. Accept feedback graciously, even if it is difficult to hear or poorly delivered. The only appropriate response when someone gives you feedback is, Thank you. If youre not receiving feedback, ask for it. Your manager will respect your desire to learn and improve.10. Act your age.Which is another way of saying, act professionally. Even if you are going back to school in September, you are in a professional environment for the summer, and a client visiting the office for contract negotiations has no way of knowing whether you are an intern or a full-time staff. That advice goes for all work functions, both inside and outside the office. Dont be that intern who drank so much that he passed out in front of the elevator during the off site meeting, wearing a hat and a t-shirt with the firm logo. That i s a true story, and no, he did not get an offer. In closing, remember during the good days and the tough ones that this summer internship is an opportunity. Keep your eye on what matters most, and stay in the game. Be polite, be helpful, be the intern that others want to work with. If you love the company, but the internship does not automatically imply a full-time offer, ask about positions. If you learn that your dream job is not so dreamy after all, count that as a useful experience anyway.Need help with your resume? Take advantage of our free critique today

On the flip side, once the work applicant has strong experience, there is not any need to depend on the academic training any longer and it doesnt need to get mentioned. The capacity of good managers to delegate distinctive responsibilities to employees gives workers a feeling of worth, teamwork, drive, and the chance to le arn new skills as each aim is met. When deciding what to include, you need to start by thinking about the nature of your prospective employers, your degree of experience, and the abilities and certifications desired. Not everybody is good at handling others, so in case you can offer hard evidence of your people skills by quantifying the impact youve made through exceptional customer support, youll be irresistible to possible employers. However tempting it may be to stretch the truth, lying on your resume is always a poor idea. All you need to do is point and click. There are lots of instances when, you need to think practically, in regards to deal with the concerns of career building. Furthermore, you know your own shortcomings and things that you ought to avoid stressing on. Most hiring managers or recruiters dont have the time to match unspecified resumes to open positions, its therefore important to lead off with a career summary or introductory statement which makes it cle ar which type of position youre seeking and why youre qualified for the position. Employers will demand for at least two references when applying for any job. Job aspirants seeking good jobs are able to make use of sample resumes and enhance their profile. 1 advantage for employers to internet resumes is the substantial cost saving in contrast to traditional hiring methods.Writing a CV is not too hard endeavor to accomplish as perceived by the majority of of the folks. Resumes are usually not read completely by the employers and they might often miss out the important data in your CV which can help you stand apart from the crowd. Resume objectives are occasionally regarded as the old schooltype of resume. Writing career objective is a typical practice in the expert industry.

Women#8217;s Earnings On the Rise
Women8217s Earnings On the Rise Society assumes we bridged the gender equality gap a long time ago. In truth, theres still much to be done, especially in terms of equal earnings. Fortunately, significant progress has been made over the belastung 21 years.Between 1979 and 2010, the earnings gap between women and men narrowed for most age groups, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. Additionally, women aged 25 years and older are experiencing better earnings growth than men of a similar age demographic. The graph below outlines womens earnings over time, as a percent of mens earnings (100% would be equal). While great strides of improvement have been made, the data shows that women are still not earning as much as their male counterparts. While this conclusion is ultimately distressing, the data suggests womens earnings will continue trending upwards. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also compared me n and women of different education levels to see which group was experiencing the most rapid changes in earnings.Although both women and men without a high school diploma have experienced declines in inflation-adjusted earnings from 1979 to 2010, the drop for women was significantly less than that for men a 9-percent drop for women as opposed to a 31-percent drop for men. From 1979 to 2010, on an inflation-adjusted basis, earnings for women with a college degree have increased by 33 percent, while those of male college graduates have risen by 20 percent. This data solidifies our estimates of positive future trending for womens earnings. The next few years should bring encouraging figures that will hopefully, one day, bridge our nations earnings gap.

How to work out safely in summer heat
How to work out safely in summer heatHow to work out safely in summer heatThe summer sun warms your skin from head to toe and fills us with energy-boosting vitamin D that makes outdoor activities that much better. It can amp up your workouts to the next level but you have to be careful to not risk scary side effects like heat stroke or hypohydratation. Heres how to make the fruchtwein of your summer sweat sessions withoutrisking scary things like heat stroke and severe dehydration.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreRise and grindRoll out your yoga mat and get moving early to avoid severe summer heat. Morning workouts are a good time to test your endurance and get your heart rate up before humidity soars. This will help your body gradually adjust to higher temperatures and avoid any shock.Wear the right fabricsWhen summer arrives, you need to swap any cotton workout clothes for syn thetic, moisture-wicking fabrics so your skin can breathe as much as possible as you heat up. We wont tell you whether to rock the t-shirt or tank top or the leggings or booty shorts. The style is entirely up to you since its more about what youre comfortable exercising in, but definitely read those labels and keep yourself as cool as possible from the start. Light colors are also a plus since they reflect the suns rays rather than absorb them like those fave black leggings of yours.Hydrate, hydrate, hydrateThis one is a no-brainer, yet we often let it fall by the wayside. Be sure to drink plenty of water before bed to keep yourself as hydrated as possible overnight, down a glass first thing in the morning when you wake up and bring aninsulated reusable bottleof cold water with you during your morning workout. Thevast majority of us are already terrible at drinking enough waterthroughout the day, so you need to prioritize your healthy fluids to avoid the problematic dehydration that can come with working out in the summer heat.Dont forget the SPFIf youre exercising outside anytime after sunrise, you need to lather up with sunscreen first. We know - it can make you feel even slimier and sweaty, but its worth protecting your skin from unnecessary free radical damage and brutal sunburns. Keep an eye on the UV index (which your weather app on your phone can tell you at any point in time) and reapply accordingly. If you wait until lunchtime to go for that jog, a UV index of 10 is nothing to mess around with.Seek out the shadeJust because youre taking your workout outside doesnt mean you have to stand in direct sunlight to reap all the benefits. If youre moving through a bodyweight strength training circuit, relocate under a big tree or an awning to reap the benefits of the heat and humidity without overdoing it. Theres nothing wimpy about the shade. If anything, itll help youcrank through that many more burpeesbefore you call it quits, ultimately benefitting your w orkouts more than the heat alone.Carry electrolytes with you - just in caseWith dehydration being a major risk of exercising outside in the heat, its always a good idea to pack some electrolytes in the off chance you feel dizzy, faint, queasy or weak. Were partial to NUUN tabletsbecause theyre easy to transport, dissolve perfectly in your water bottle and contain only good-for-you ingredients. But you could also opt for a Gatorade or make your own electrolyte drink at home. Whatever works best for youPush yourself but honor your limitsWhen it comes to fitness, your priority should always be to listen to your body, but this focal point becomes even more important when youre working out in the heat.Know the signs of heat exhaustion(heavy sweating, muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, etc.) and give your body a rest when it needs it. Theres no point in being a summer workout hero if it means ending up in a hospital bed or worse. This article first appeared on Swirled.
5 Ways to Take Your Job Search to the Next Level
5 Ways to Take Your Job Search to the Next Level 5 Ways to Take Your Job Search to the Next Level Thereâs no shortage of great career advice , but one of the most powerful resources you can tap is somebody who recently landed a job themselves. For one, theyâll have a more accurate view of the labor market. (For example: Ever had a grandparent tell you that the best way to get a job is to walk right into the office and ask for one? Not exactly the case anymore.) But for another, the fact that theyâve managed to break through and score a job means that they usually have insight into how you can do the same. To get some of these invaluable tips, we reached out to Katherine L. from Denver, who found a job on Glassdoor last summer and has been thriving at her new company. Here are five of her tips on how you can take your job search to new heights in order to land your dream role. Itâs no secret that the job hunt can be a slog, so any time you can automate part of the process, you should. If youâre tired of scrolling through job listings to find the right match, you might want to create a job alert . Job alerts do the heavy lifting for you when it comes to finding the job thatâs right for you. Just enter the job title youâre looking for, the location youâre targeting and your email address, and youâll get personalized job search results delivered to your inbox daily. âI had a saved, filtered search on Glassdoor and I got emails with jobs in travel and tourism that I might be interested in. I saw listings for my current company and thought, âI have to check it out - I keep getting recommended jobs from there.â Once I did, I thought the company looked super cool,â Katherine said. A lot of folks feel pressured to find a new job ASAP , whether out of financial need after a long period of unemployment or a desire to leave a toxic environment. But if you can take a little bit of extra time to find a job and company that youâre really passionate about - not just one that will pay the bills - itâll likely pay off in the long run. Katherine had always been passionate about travel and tourism, and was, in fact, on a career break traveling southeast Asia when she first started searching for jobs on Glassdoor. For her next opportunity, she became increasingly convinced that she wanted to marry her interests with her 9-to-5. âWhat really drew me to my current company was the fact that Iâm very passionate about travel and hospitality⦠We do vacation rental management, so we essentially help people earn their maximum possible vacation rental income, so it fit into my whole career curve,â Katherine said. Learning as much as you possibly can about a company before you apply will help you decide whether or not itâs right for you. Plus, research shows that nearly nine in ten hiring decision makers(88 percent) agree that an informed candidate is a quality candidate ( Source: Aptitude Research Partners, 2017). Katherine relied heavily on Glassdoor to scope out the companies she was applying to. âOther sites may provide a job description, but I just love how Glassdoor has reviews , too. Theyâre very candid, and people donât hold back. I really appreciate that - it lets you hear the good and the bad,â she said. âI felt the information I came across was very reflective of how it actually is now - I knew what I was getting myself into, rather than being thrown off guard.â A few other things Katherine recommended looking into were benefits, company photos and, of course, salaries . âSometimes, I would see jobs and think, âOh, thatâs a really great opportunity!â But then once I saw the salary, I realized that it actually wasnât practical for where I am now. Rather than getting yourself all the way to the end of the process and realizing itâs not going to work for you, Glassdoor lets you set opportunities aside in the beginning,â Katherine said. âWith Glassdoor, you get the actual jobs, reviews, salaries and benefits all in one spot.â One of the best features on Glassdoor is the interview reviews section . Using this tool, you can explore individual companies to see how difficult their interviews are, whether candidates have had a positive or negative experience, how often candidates tend to accept offers and even which questions recruiters and hiring managers at that company ask. For example, a recently-hired Senior Recruiter at Glassdoor reported that they were asked questions like âTell me about a time you had to work with a difficult manager?â and âWhat makes you a great recruiter?â You can also enter the name of the position youâll be interviewing for to see which questions candidates for those roles are typically asked. Someone interviewing for an Executive Assistant position could be asked âWhatâs the toughest job youâve held so far and why?â or â Describe a time when you had to manage up.â This was a feature that Katherine made sure to leverage before heading into her job interview. âI was definitely all over the interview reviews just so I could see what to expect and give myself an idea of what I needed to focus on,â she shared. Even if you nail the interview and land the job, as Katherine did, you canât rest on your laurels just yet. All of the information youâve gathered in the research phase and interview process should all be leveraged to help you thrive once you actually start the job. To really wow your new colleagues, take everything youâve learned about what the expectations for the role are, what success looks like at the company and how you can most effectively collaborate with your coworkers and use it to become a star employee. Katherine, for one, was able to put all the knowledge she gathered to good use and in just under a year, she was promoted to a new title and a new team. âItâs neat to see how coming across my initial job on Glassdoor has led to further career opportunities at my current company,â Katherine said. âThanks to Glassdoor, my current role is by far the best fit Iâve had in my professional career.â

Tips on How to Get the Sales Job of Your Dreams
Tips on How to Get the Sales Job of Your Dreams Tips on How to Get the Sales Job of Your Dreams 4 Tips for Landing the Sales Job of Your Dreams Looking to land a sales job youâre excited about, but donât know where to start? Hereâs some tips. Even if you haven't been working in sales long, you probably know that there are a lot of sales jobs out there. The sales function is critical to the success of any company according to a LinkedInsurvey of over 4,000 recruiting managers, sales roles were identified as the highest-priority positions to fill. Despite the number and variety of sales jobs, it can be a challenge to find the position that's the right fit for you and your sales style. When you do find what seems to be your dream job, you want to do everything you can to land it. Here are some techniques and tips on how to get the sales job you've always wanted. Use LinkedIn According to a report by Jobvite, recruiters use LinkedIn to research job candidates more than any other social media site. When you're actively looking, LinkedIn can be a useful tool for not only landing your ideal job, but also finding out about it in the first place. One research study estimates that 85 percent of all open jobs are filled via networking, which means that LinkedIn can be a useful vehicle for expanding your network and learning about new opportunities from your connections. Some of the other ways you can use LinkedIn to find your dream sales job are: Endorsements and recommendations: Don't be shy about asking clients, co-workers, or bosses to give you a LinkedIn recommendation. When recruiters are checking out your LinkedIn profile, they'll be impressed to see endorsement and recommendations from clients praising your relationship-building and sales skills. A strong profile: From having a professional photo to a well-written job history, you can develop a winning LinkedIn profile that stands out in comparison to other sales candidates. Highlight relevant work experience A 2018 survey on sales hiringfound that 90 percent of hiring managers say it's increasingly difficult to hire sales professionals, citing candidates' lack of relevant experience as the key reason. If you want to be considered a top candidate for the sales position you desire, you'll need to spend time organizing your resume to highlight the areas that are relevant to that position. Your resume should also include demonstrated success in the areas important to hiring managers. These include the number of new clients, President's Club wins, or the percentage of sales over quota you've accomplished so far. Updating your resume is also important, especially if you are looking at different types of sales positions. For example, after many years in roles with a high-price, low-volume sales cycle, you may be applying for a high-volume sales role. In that case, you'll need to position your work experience to highlight the times when you either worked in a high-volume sales role or closed a high number of individual transactions with the same client. You'll also need to be able to speak articulately about those work experiences in an interview. Even if the experience is further back in your career, it's important to highlight it, lest your resume be tossed into the no relevant experience pile. Related: Ask Amanda: How Do I Create a Skills Section for My Resume? Deliver a strong pitch When interviewing for a sales position, there is an expectation of strong verbal communication skills and interpersonal dexterity that demonstrates your ability to sell. Successfully interviewing for a sales position involves more than having good answers to commonly-asked questions. It also requires having a thoughtful, well-practiced pitch that shows you've researched the company and its products and are ready to hit the ground running if hired. Whether you're interviewing with HR or the hiring manager, you should be ready to deliver a pitch that sounds something like the one that might be delivered by current members of the sales team. Of course, it won't sound exactly the same, as you won't have had the benefit of sales materials or training, but your pitch should be convincing enough that the hiring manager can see your potential for success. Negotiate your offer with finesse You understandably want to land a job with a great compensation package. When you're close to accepting your dream sales job offer, it's important to determine if the compensation structure is one you can live with long term. If it isn't, you may need to negotiate the offer. When you're negotiating a job offer, it's important to be professional and flexible. If you think the commission formula undervalues certain types of sales, then explain your views to the hiring manager or HR. Politely ask if they will consider an alternate commission structure. Many companies have a compensation plan in place that is applied fairly to the whole sales team, so they may not be willing to change it. However, there may be an opportunity to adjust your base salary or another component of the job offer instead. It may also take time for the company to consider your concerns. Therefore, it's best to demonstrate patience while trying to negotiate. The hiring process can be challenging and even stressful for companies and candidates alike. Yet, when you find the sales job of your dreams, there are things you can do to demonstrate you're the candidate they've been looking for all along. Be like Betty White How a likeable demeanor can translate into a lifelong career
Be like Betty White How a likeable demeanor can translate into a lifelong career Be like Betty White How a likeable demeanor can translate into a lifelong career The gig economy has not only changed the way many of us work day-to-day, it has also turned the notion of any sort of long-term corporate career on its ear. These days, a six-month project might seem long-term to some, while it might have been deemed a training period in decades past.Yet some people are able to navigate workplace changes and constantly reinvent themselves to stay relevant in every job market.Consider the trailblazing Betty Marion White Ludden, AKA Betty White, who according to Guinness World Records, has the longest television career of any female entertainer. With about 75 years as a performer and producer under her belt, White was also the first woman to produce a sitcom and named honorary Mayor of Hollywood way back in 1955. Whiteâs iconic and Emmy Award-winning roles included Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1973â"77), Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls (1985â"92) and Elka Ostrovsky on Hot in Cleveland (2010-15). Now 95, the Emmy-award winning White was also the oldest person ever to host Saturday Night Live (in 2010 when she was 88). She once said âRetirement is not in my vocabulary. They arenât going to get rid of me that way.âSo, what makes Betty White so beloved by people across all ages and life stages and what can we learn from her incredible career trajectory?Itâs okay to be likeableBeing nice in the workplace is sometimes seen as a sign of weakness, so people - especially women or younger workers â" might try to toughen up their personas or approach, to mixed results.Thereâs a huge difference between being nice and being a pushover, and Betty White exemplifies the perfect balance between remaining sweet while sharp as a tack. The key to remaining likeable without losing your edge, according to Carey Pinkowski, CEO of Chicago Event Management, is to ârespect the humanity of everyone with whom you do business. From CEO to coordinator, we are all the same at our core.âPinowski says he builds being nice into his outlook despite managing some of the most competitive events in the nation.âIâve managed to be a nice person while leading the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and navigating the cutthroat global sports world for more than 25 years.âPinkowski says heâs learned to do this by witnessing âthe messy and beautiful resilience, perseverance and competitiveness delivered by 40,000 runners who take on 26.2 miles.âAge is relativeWith so many career guides aimed at millennials, and those over 40 sometimes made to feel out of touch in the workplace, it can be easy to lose hope sometimes of having an extensive or robust career.According to my quick calculations, White started her role as Elka Ostrovsky on Hot in Cleveland when she was 88 years old- a full 23 years past the average retirement age in America. Meanwhile, at age 91, Queen Elizabeth is still the ruling monarch in the U.K. and at 84, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg remains a force to be reckoned with. Itâs nice to know that even in a youth-obsessed culture, you donât have to assume that your age is the only thing that defines your professional viability.Choose OptimismSome people use snark as their weapon of choice. Others, like White, seem to always convey a sense of optimism. Despite her incredible life and career trajectory, White seems to always convey a sense of optimism and excitement about what comes next.Cantât connect to your rose-colored glasses? Consider adopting the belief that no matter how awful things seem in the moment, thereâs only one direction for them to go: up.âThereâs always room for a situation to improve. When I meet somebody and it doesnât go well, I come away from the situation feeling optimistic â" it can only get better,â said Pinowski.I recently spoke with an 88-year-old woman who told me a bit of her fascinating history, which included being orphaned when still a toddler; being imprisoned as a political prisoner when she was only 20; an d becoming a widow and single mother to three young children before she was 40.The T-shirt she wore during our conversation was emblazoned with the message âDonât live in the past. The best is still ahead of you.âItâs not a sprint, itâs a marathonIâm sure youâve heard that expression way too many times, but in the quest for the next raise or title upgrade, some people stop paying attention to the things that build character and set the foundation for a career - and fall victim to bouncing from one job to the next. The entire world has changed around her, yet White has managed to adapt to the times while staying true to the formulas that brought her the most success. Sure, she had some bombs along the way (The failed Golden-Girls spinoff show, Golden Palace, comes to mind), but those donât define her. Itâs her long-term success and consistency that stand out.Itâs not about youIn an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2010, White was asked the most important thing sheâs learned in her life. Her response? âProfessionalism.ââItâs not about you, itâs about everyone. Donât take yourself too seriously. Come to the set prepared and donât act like you know more than anyone else or youâre more important than anyone else in the production.â Which is true for any work environment, no matter your title or pay-grade.Do what you loveIn that same interview, White gushed about her extensive philanthropic work.âWell, you know, I have to keep acting so that I can afford to keep doing my charity work!â said White, whoâs been involved with the Los Angeles Zoo and the the Morris Animal Foundation for more than 4 decades. âIâm actually the luckiest old broad alive. Half my life is working in a profession I love and the other half is working with animals. I couldnât ask for more.â

How to make your flaws the key to your success
How to make your flaws the key to your success How to make your flaws the key to your success The same traits that make people a nightmare to deal with can also make them the people who change the world. As any mathematician knows, averages can be deceptive. As a general rule, anything better aligned to fit a unique scenario is going to be problematic on average. And qualities that are âgenerally goodâ can be bad at the extremes. When it comes to the extremes of performance, averages donât matter; what matters is variance, those deviations from the norm. You may think intensifiers are only relevant to areas of individual artistry and expertise, like sports, or that they just arenât relevant in the regular world. Youâd be wrong.Consider some of the richest people in the world. Do you see conscientious rule followers, free from negative outlier traits? No.Fifty-eight members of the Forbes 400 either avoided college or ditched it partway through. These fifty-eight - almost 15% of the total - have an average net worth of $4.8 billion. This is 167% greater than the avera ge net worth of the four hundred, which is $1.8 billion. Itâs more than twice the average net worth of those four hundred members who attended Ivy League colleges. The hard-charging Silicon Valley entrepreneur has become a respected, admired icon in the modern age. Do these descriptors match the stereotype? A ball of energy. Little need for sleep. A risk taker. Doesnât suffer fools gladly. Confident and charismatic, bordering on hubristic. Boundlessly ambitious. Driven and restless.Absolutely. Theyâre also the traits associated with a clinical condition called hypomania. Johns Hopkins psychologist John Gartner has done work showing thatâs not a coincidence. Full-blown mania renders people unable to function in normal society. But hypomania produces a relentless, euphoric, impulsive machine that explodes toward its goals while staying connected (even if only loosely) with reality. So under the right circumstances there can be big upsides to ânegativeâ qualities. Your âbad â traits might be intensifiers. But how can you turn them into superpowers?I asked Gautam Mukunda, Assistant Professor in the Organizational Behavior Unit of Harvard Business School, and he said there are two steps.First, know thyselfIf youâre good at playing by the rules, if youâre a filtered leader, then double down on that. Make sure you have a path that works for you.If youâre more of an outsider, an artist, an unfiltered leader, youâll be climbing uphill if you try to succeed by complying with a rigid, formal structure. By dampening your intensifiers, youâll be not only at odds with who you are but also denying your key advantages.By knowing where your strengths are, youâre miles ahead of the average person in terms of achieving both success and happiness. Modern positive psychology research has shown again and again that one of the keys to happiness is emphasizing what are called âsignature strengths.âResearch by Gallup shows that the more hours per day you spend doing what youâre good at, the less stressed you feel and the more you laugh, smile, and feel youâre being treated with respect.Once you know what type of person you are and your signature strengths, how do you thrive? This leads to Mukundaâs second piece of advice.Second, pick the right pondYouâve got to pick the environments that work for you. Context is so important. The unfiltered leader who is an amazing success in one situation will be a catastrophic failure in the other, in almost all cases. Itâs way too easy to think, âIâve always succeeded, I am a success, I am successful because I am a success, because itâs about me, and therefore I will succeed in this new environment.âWrong. You were successful because you happened to be in an environment where your biases and predispositions and talents and abilities all happened to align neatly with those things that would produce success in that environment.Ask yourself: Which companies, institutions, and situa tions value what I do?Context affects everyone. In fact, the conscientious valedictorians so good at following rules often stumble the most here. Without an existing passion and being so eager to please, they often head in the wrong direction when theyâre finally free to choose.Whether youâre a filtered doctor or a wild, unfiltered artist, research shows the pond you pick matters enormously. When Harvard Business School professor Boris Groysberg looked at top Wall Street analysts who jumped ship to work for a competitor, he noticed something interesting: they stopped being top analysts. Why? We tend to think experts are experts just because of their unique skills and we forget the power of context, of knowing oneâs way around, of the teams who support them, and the shorthand they develop together over time. Thatâs one of the things Groysberg discovered: when the analysts switched firms but brought their team with them, they stayed awesome. When you choose your pond wisely, you can best leverage your type, your signature strengths, and your context to create tremendous value. This is what makes for a great career, but such self-knowledge can create value wherever you choose to apply it.If you follow rules well, find an organization aligned with your signature strengths and go full steam ahead. Society clearly rewards those who can comply, and these people keep the world an orderly place. If youâre more of an unfiltered type, be ready to blaze your own path. Itâs risky, but thatâs what you were built for. Leverage the intensifiers that make you unique. Youâre more likely to reach the heights of success - and happiness - if you embrace your âflaws.âFrom Barking Up The Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong. Military Stop-Loss Policy
Military Stop-Loss Policy Military Stop-Loss Policy There are times in history when the military cannot be reduced any further. Typically, this means our country is engaged in some sort of hostile conflict. However, it can also mean a branch of service is not meeting its recruiting goals to have additional numbers adding to the military population. There can also be certain jobs or MOSs that the military needs at a particular time and that group with those skills cannot depart military service. The term used to describe this situation is Stop-Loss. The military handles these situations one of two ways. Initiating the Stop-Loss Provision, or using the recall rule under the Presidents Reserve Call-Up Authority. One way or another, the needs of the military during critical times will be met by either not allowing active duty members to leave the military or bringing former active duty members back into the military through the Reserves or Individual Ready Reserves if the volunteerism is not meeting the demands. What Stop Loss Is In military terms, stop-loss means not letting a military member separate or retire once their required term of service is complete.??? Enlistment Contract And The Individual Ready Reserves There is a difference between Stop Loss and the contract you signed the day you enlisted in the military. When anyone joins any branch of the United States Military for the first time, they incur a minimum eight-year total service obligation (some special jobs, such as pilot, can incur even longer service obligations). Whatever time is not spent on active duty or in the active Guard/Reserves must be spent in the Individual Ready Reserves (IRR). Members of the IRR dont drill, nor do they receive any pay, but they are subject to recall to active duty at any time during their time in the IRR. It is rare but can occur if the United States is attacked or there is a critical need for a particular skill a former active duty member has that the military needs immediately. For example, if someone joins the Army under a two-year enlistment, and then gets out, he or she is subject to recall to active duty for another six years. If someone joins the Air Force for four years and then separates, he or she can be recalled to active duty for four more years. It is spelled out in paragraph 10a of the enlistment contract, which states: If this is my initial enlistment, I must serve a total of eight (8) years. Any part of that service not served on active duty must be served in a Reserve Component, unless I am sooner discharged. This is not considered stop-loss, though it is often assumed to be. It is part of the Presidents Reserve Call-Up Authority. Stop-Loss Stop-loss is the extension of a military persons term in the Guard, Reserves or active duty beyond what their normal separation date. Those who join the military agree to this provision under paragraph 9c of the enlistment contract: In the event of war, my enlistment in the Armed Forces continues until six (6) months after the war ends, unless my enlistment is ended sooner by the President of the United States. That is the basis of stop-loss. The Department of Defense maintains that the term war means anytime Americas Armed Forces are engaged in hostile conflict, not only when war is declared by Congress. The stop-loss policy has been legally challenged, but federal courts have consistently found that service members terms of service may be involuntarily extended under their military contract. History of Military Stop-Loss Congress first gave stop-loss authority to the Department of Defense right after the draft ended. However, the military did not use the authority until the 1990/1991 Gulf War, when President George H. W. Bush imposed stop-loss on the military during the Gulf War. This stop-loss was later revised to include only those deployed and individuals in certain critical job skills. President Clinton imposed stop-loss at the beginning of the Bosnia deployment and during the Kosovo Air Campaign. Stop-loss was also imposed for a brief period following the 9/11 attacks, and then again in 2002 and 2003 as the military prepared for the Iraq Invasion. Current Stop-Loss Policy The current stop-loss program only affects members of the active duty Army, the Army Reserves and the Army National Guard, and it only affects individuals who are either deployed or have been officially notified that they are scheduled for deployment. Such members are prevented from separating or retiring from the point of deployment notification and up to 90 days following return from deployment.
